WALKLATE & FUSCHI

walklate.png

Mat and Paolo are an "Electric Blues Duo" as they use old tube amplifiers creating a rich tone that brings the listeners back to the very early days of the 1950’s Chicago Blues. Think of Muddy Waters plugging in his red Telecaster for the first time into an old tube amplifier and Little Walter blowing his harmonica through an old Fender Champ amplifier. The result is a magical performance that stands out for its intensity and energy.

Living in Manchester and strongly influenced by its Afro-Caribbean community, Mat and Paolo also pay homage to Ska, blending the uplifting rhythms of this genre with the spirit and sentiment of the Blues.

Paolo Fuschi - Guitar & Vocals

JOHN LAW RE-CREATIONS

newbandgrey cropped_preview.jpeg

Known mainly for his 'Congregation', playing his own original compositions, John Law has put together a stunning new group of young musicians, playing mainly his arrangements of other people’s tunes. In a move away from electronics to this purely acoustic group, he will be presenting music taken not just from the standard jazz repertoire but also music taken from pop and indie material (Beatles, Radiohead, Adele, Daft Punk).

John Law has created a band which plays highly accessible melodic music and recognised tunes in extremely creative and interactive arrangements, simple and complex, with an emphasis on spontaneous interaction in a group of highly versatile musicians.

FRIDAY 20 APRIL

DOMINIC J MARSHALL TRIO

The trio returns to The Bear following the success of the latest album “The Triolithic”. The album was listed as one of top 20 albums of 2016 in Jazzwise magazine and nominated for prestigious Edison Award. The band will play music from this acclaimed album and we can also count on being surprised with new pieces.

Dominic J Marshall Trio consists of three friends who met in Leeds, sharing a mutual love of music. Their compositional approach to improvising, coupled with a deep respect for the intimacy of the trio setting, tie together their myriad influences and ideas into a rugged yet cohesive whole. Their music evades categorisation, surging enigmatically through jazz, classical, hip-hop, soul, folk and everything in between, into a realm of expression that is uncompromisingly their own.

Dominic J Marshall - piano
Sam Vicary – double bass
Sam Gardner - drums

RENATO D'AIELLO

RENATO BLUE BIG.JPG

Renato D’Aiello has become known as one of the strongest and most beautiful saxophone sounds around.  His treatments of jazz standards, and originals, both live and on cd, have won great admiration from audiences and the press, and until recently (having now moved to sunshine pastures), he ran a very successful Monday night at Ronnie's. Back in again after his sell-out Bear gig last year.

“Renato is a superlative saxophonist with a passionate and poetic soul.  He has all the virtues - a beautiful sense of time and pacing and a technique which effortlessly projects his brilliantly flowing ideas.” - Ian Carr, Jazz writer

Renato D’Aiello - Tenor Sax
Bruno Montrone - Piano
Nicola Muresu - Bass
Alfonso Vitale - Drums

FRIDAY 27 APRIL

CHERRY LEE MEWIS

Dashes of ragtime, country blues, rock 'n' roll and a blade of bluegrass, all cemented together with pint-sized Cherry's powerhouse, energy-a-plenty, smoky vocals.

Championed by Imelda May, Seasick Steve and Walter Trout, the 5ft-nothing, power-house singer songwriter together with her smokin' hot band (including long time collaborator and guitarist Max Milligan) have produced a unique sound. Like most great performers, Cherry is best experienced live, she's got passion, power, feel smoky vocals and explosive onstage attitude, probably the reason why Cherry was asked to guest on Bernie Marsden's new album at Abbey Road Studios and accompany him on his UK tour.
