** SPECIAL SUNDAY EVENT **

SUNDAY 04 JUNE

MARY GAUTHIER

A very special opportunity, brought about by a faithful and fateful email enquiry, brings one of The Bear's favourite singer/songwriters in for the most intimate of gigs. Mary, accompanied by violinist Michele Gazich, stop off for a Sunday evening that will go down in Bear history.

A Louisiana-native turned Nashville-resident, Mary Gauthier (it’s French - pronounced Go-SHAY) has had an extraordinary life.  A teenage runaway who found her first shelter among addicts and drag queens, struggled with drug addiction and became a chef/owner of three restaurants in Boston before selling them in 2001 to become a full time songwriter.

She has subsequently received countless accolades for her six studio albums. The New York Times music writer John Pareles picked 2001’s Filth and Fire as the #1 Indy release of the year, 2005’s Mercy Now earned her the Americana Music Association’s New/Emerging Artist of the Year title and 2011’s The Foundling was named as one of the Records of the Year by the LA Times.

Mary’s songs have been praised by both Bob Dylan and Tom Waits and recorded by Jimmy Buffett, Blake Shelton, Boy George, Tim McGraw, Candi Staton amongst others.

Trouble and Love, her first studio CD since 2010, was co-produced by Mary with Patrick Granado (whose credits include Grammys for a Delbert McClinton record he produced and a tribute CD to Stephen Foster),  recorded in Ricky Skaggs studio outside Nashville and features the support of Darrell Scott, Beth Nielsen Chapman and Ashley Cleveland.

One track from Trouble and Love, “How You Learn To Live Alone”, co-written with Gretchen Peters, was chosen for Season II of the hit TV show Nashville. On the record, the legendary Duane Eddy plays guitar on this song.

FRIDAY 09 JUNE

THE GREEN ROCK RIVER BAND

The Green Rock River Band is an eight-piece band from London, England. The band has come together over several years, merging Old Time, Americana, British Music Hall and Folk into an explosive and memorable live set that has established itself on the UK acoustic folk circuit as one of the leading loud, brash and energetic groups.

Fire and brimstone story telling weaves its way throughout the songs, with harmonies and dirty gravel filled lead vocals. All underscored by untamed fiddle lines, sultry jazz fused trombone and thumping bass, the washboard and drums always inspiring audiences everywhere to get up out of their seats. Quality song writing and musical arrangements are at the heart of the GRRB repertoire keeping live sets fresh, exciting and at times moving.

SPECIAL EVENT - THE BEAR TURNS CLASSICAL

TUESDAY 20 JUNE

HINDEMITH GOES APE

Tonight, we present the WORLD PREMIERE of new work, played by Cheryl Frances-Hoad (Piano) and Brant Tilds (Trumpet) and special guest Ben Dawson (Piano).  Composed by: Piers Hellawell, Gordon Crosse, Chery Frances-Hoad and Poul Erik Christensen.

Brant Tilds

Brant Tilds

About a year ago Brant Tilds decided that he wanted to commission 5 minute companion pieces for the Hindemith Trumpet Sonata.  His composition teacher in California was Hindemith's main student in America, Nicholas England.  Professor England accepted him, and he continues to have a great affinity for Hindemith to this day.

Cheryl Frances-Hoad - Pianist & Composer

Brant: "I also like the idea of a dialog between Europe and America in music.  Hindemith came from Germany, influenced American music, went back to Europe, and now I have European composers writing these pieces for me, an American trumpet player living in Europe, to take back to America."

The theme "Hindemith and Animals" is in reference to the plot of Hindemith's opera "Mathis Der Maler," the true story of the painter of the Isenheim Altarpiece persecuted for his artistic expression of political beliefs.

The Ralph Vaughn Williams Foundation kindly funded some of the commissioning fees.

SUNDAY 25 JUNE

JAZZ JAM

What is the Jazz Jam?

The Jazz Jam is a session led by a great house band, where musicians and singers come to try out material, play old classics and sit in with other players.

Who is it for?

It is for everyone. Half of the crowd come to play, half come to just watch. It's the sort of gig where you don't know what's coming next.

What's the vibe?

It's a relaxed Sunday afternoon feel, very friendly and a chance to see some great music up close, often with musical combinations and improvisations that you will never see again.

If you are lucky...

....you might even see Perry's jazz dancers who stop in every now and then, clear some tables, and hit the floor.
