FRIDAY 06 MAY

BLAKEY'S BOYS

A fast swinging show celebrating Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers with Andy Davies & Matt Teller Band. Narrated by Paul Pace.

Hot on the heels of a sell-out show at Pizza Express, Soho, Blakey's Boys make their way to The Bear Jazz Club for their debut gig, Fronted by hard blowing tenor man Matt Telfer and Ronnie Scott's resident trumpeter Andy Davies, Blakey’s Boys perform popular arrangements from the legendary Jazz Messengers which, led by drumming icon Art Blakey, was undoubtedly one of the most influential jazz combos with a career spanning 35 years.

The boys play arrangements of favourites such as Blues March, Moanin' and Are You Real with Blakey's trademark raw energy and deep swing, whilst paying homage to composers Benny Golson, Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons and Wayne Shorter. Between numbers Paul Pace takes to the stage to narrate the Art Blakey story and give a vivid picture of the various editions of the Messengers. Expect a high energy, fast swinging show!

“a brilliant vocal chameleon . . . there’s actually more heart in Ian Shaw’s cleverness than in many singers who wear their hearts conspicuously on their sleeves” - The Telegraph on “The Theory Of Joy”

SATURDAY 28 MAY

IAN SHAW

Ian Shaw has been described as one of the most distinctive, original and creative jazz singers that the UK has produced, as well as being a talented pianist, song writer, presenter and record producer.

Twice voted “Best Jazz Vocalist” at the prestigious BBC Jazz Awards, the recorded output of the London based singer and consummate showman includes three US releases; his 14th album, “The Theory Of Joy” has just been released and this is the material that he is touring currently.

His solo shows and performances with his regular piano trio become ever more popular but he is also much in demand as the featured soloist with big bands and orchestras both in the UK and internationally. Over the years he has collaborated with the likes of Quincy Jones, Van Morrison, Georgie Fame, Cleo Laine, Kenny Wheeler, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Nigel Kennedy, Kurt Elling and and The Who’s Pete Townsend and has toured with Abdullah Ibrahim, The Boston Pops and Cedar Walton. A regular headline draw at London's iconic Ronnie Scott's (he presents their worldwide radio show also), Shaw has regularly toured the US and Canada, last year saw his debut in Australia and this Spring he has been performing in the Far East.
