WALLER

fats-waller-encore.png

Rising-star bassist Mark Lewandowski brings together two of the most highly respected musicians on the UK jazz scene to explore the catalogue of one of the most nostalgic early innovators of jazz - the great Thomas ‘Fats’ Waller.  They will be delving into Wallers music and bringing their own personal spin on his repertoire using the intimate trio setting.  Three musicians known for their intricate dialogues and strong humour, paying tribute to another musician who had these attributes.  Mixing the traditional with the modern, this trio brings a little of 1930s Harlem into the 21st Century.

Mark Lewandowski - double bass
Liam Noble - piano, fender rhodes
Paul Clarvis - drums

PARTISANS

Partisans are widely acknowledged as the godfathers of the new wave of British post-jazz and improv, and have outlived many of the bands that have come since their formation. BBC Radio 3 asserts they are “one of the most exciting all star experimental groups in jazz today”.

PARTISANS1.jpg

With years of touring around the globe and a cult following in their native UK, where they have played every conceivable venue from backwater pubs to the largest concert halls and festivals, Partisans have released four albums to date: their self-titled debut (1997, EFZ), Sourpuss (2000, Babel), Max (2005, Babel) and By Proxy (2009, Babel). But it's Swamp that sees the band completely blow open their already eclectic and unpredictable palette, taking their music to new heights as a result of their near 20 years together.

This heavyweight jazz quartet continues to carve
its own niche, with an eclectic jazz mix."

"Great voice" - Imelda May
"Cherry got the blues!" - Seasick Steve

SATURDAY 13 MAY

CHERRY LEE MEWIS

Dashes of ragtime, country blues, rock 'n' roll and a blade of bluegrass, all cemented together with pint-sized Cherry's powerhouse, energy-a-plenty, smoky vocals.

Championed by Imelda May, Seasick Steve and Walter Trout, the 5ft-nothing, power-house singer songwriter together with her smokin' hot band (including long time collaborator and guitarist Max Milligan) have produced a unique sound. Like most great performers, Cherry is best experienced live, she's got passion, power, feel smoky vocals and explosive onstage attitude, probably the reason why Cherry was asked to guest on Bernie Marsden's new album at Abbey Road Studios and accompany him on his UK tour.

2017 marks the release of Cherry's BBC Sessions EP and will once again find Cherry yet again performing all over the UK and in Memphis and Mississippi.

SUNDAY 28 MAY

JAZZ JAM

What is the Jazz Jam?

The Jazz Jam is a session led by a great house band, where musicians and singers come to try out material, play old classics and sit in with other players.

Who is it for?

It is for everyone. Half of the crowd come to play, half come to just watch. It's the sort of gig where you don't know what's coming next.

What's the vibe?

It's a relaxed Sunday afternoon feel, very friendly and a chance to see some great music up close, often with musical combinations and improvisations that you will never see again.

If you are lucky...

....you might even see Perry's jazz dancers who stop in every now and then, clear some tables, and hit the floor.
