SIMIANS OF SWING

The Simians of Swing are no ordinary jazz group; they are story tellers in the great comic book tradition.  Each number on this album is a soundtrack to a hero or villain; some of the characters are good, most are bad … but all are legends with tales of revenge, tragedy and romance. Set in a post-apocalyptic world the Simians narrate their stories through the medium of jazz.

Simians for the night will be:

Sara Dowling - vocals
Andy Davies - trumpet
Luca Boscagin - guitar
Lorenzo Bassignani - bass
Josh Blackmore - drums

MEIER-BUDJANA BAND

Poster Meier-Budjana copy.jpg

The Meier-Budjana Band is a group of superlative guitarists and accomplished musicians, dedicated to creating music which exceeds stylistic and cultural bounds. True sonic explorers, with a distinctive ethnic blend of Middle-Eastern and South-East Asian flavors, theirs is a music which is both soulful and cerebral.

The band is co-chaired by Swiss-born and UK-based Nicolas Meier and Indonesian guitar icon of Balinese descent Dewa Budjana.

After touring the world extensively as a member of The Jeff Beck Group, Nicolas Meier is a gentleman who is quickly making the transition from a name that few recognize to "a man who needs no introduction!" In less than two decades of being a professional musician, Meier performed and recorded with musicians such as Jeff Beck, Gilad Atzmon, John Etheridge, Jimmy Haslip, Vinnie Colaiuta, Pete Oxley, Deidre Cartwrigh, Harry Beckett, Jonathan Joseph among many others.

Fans of Indonesian rock need no introduction to Dewa Budjana; he has long been an iconic figure. His band Gigi has been going strong for more than twenty years now – packing out huge venues and selling millions of albums. In a historical context, Budjana is unquestionably one of his nation's most famous, beloved musicians. But Gigi represents a fraction of his musical persona. A master composer, arranger and producer, Dewa Budjana has, in just a few short years, amassed a masterful collection of progressive music albums as a solo artist – work which transcends genre, in glorious fashion.

Something pretty special will happen at The Bear Club this evening.

MONTE PIANO TRIO

Alongside Beethoven and Amy Beach’s lyrical Piano Trio, this is a chance to enjoy the first of many works by Dvořák throughout the season as we honour the work of musicians from Eastern Europe. The Monte Trio’s Romanian born pianist Irina Botan will surely bring an authentic approach to this exhilarating music.

SUNDAY 29 OCTOBER

Focusonjazz_col.jpeg

What is the Jazz Jam?

The Jazz Jam is a session led by a great house band, where musicians and singers come to try out material, play old classics and sit in with other players.

Who is it for?

It is for everyone. Half of the crowd come to play, half come to just watch. It's the sort of gig where you don't know what's coming next.

What's the vibe?

It's a relaxed Sunday afternoon feel, very friendly and a chance to see some great music up close, often with musical combinations and improvisations that you will never see again.

If you are lucky...

....you might even see Perry's jazz dancers who stop in every now and then, clear some tables, and hit the floor.
