FRIDAY 05 OCT

FRASER & THE ALIBIS

London based four piece Fraser & the Alibis play the hippest in Bop, Blues and Boogaloo. Inspired by the big tenor sax sounds of Dexter Gordon and the screaming Organ of Jimmy Smith, the band play original tunes, deeply entrenched in the roots of the music. With a nod to 'Sam Butera and the Winesses',  Fraser & the Alibis channel the intensity and feel good effect of the swing and jive music of the dance hall era, combined with the intricacies and virtuosities of later jazz movements.

The band  features some of the most in-demand, young improvisers on the London scene. After playing approximately 400 gigs together over the last decade, they released their much anticipated debut Album in October 2017.

Fraser Smith - Tenor Sax
Joe Webb - Organ
Harry Sankey - Guitar
Gethin Jones - Drums

WEDNESDAY 10 OCT

HAPPY SHARK COMEDY presents…

angelos_barry.jpg

Our first show of the new comedy season is an absolute gem and will be headlined by Angelos and Barry performing their recent Edinburgh hour in full!

ANGELOS AND BARRY
BBC's Angelos Epithemiou and Channel 4's Barry from Watford return with a new show following their sell-out tour. Barry wants to tell you all about his career in showbiz 'at the end of the pier' while Angelos is onstage to discuss art, poetry, literature and all the other stuff no one is meant to understand. Perhaps it's time for the newly intellectual Angelos to move on. Is their fabulous double act doomed? More hysterical silliness following their last show which the Guardian called 'A puerile delight!'.

MATT RICHARDSON
Matt is a multi-award winning stand-up comedian and one of the most exciting names on the circuit currently rising through the ranks. Matt has firmly established himself as one of the UK’s most exciting young performers and presenters – hosting the drive-time show on Virgin Radio. His TV credits include co-hosting the Xtra Factor alongside Caroline Flack, Co-Hosting Celebrity Haunted Hotel Live! Alongside Christine Lampard.

WESLEY KARR & THE AUTOMOBILES

Wesley 1.jpg

A four-piece Rockabilly band with a Western Swing feel and a proper authentic sound coming from those instruments - like they came from Sun Studios directly.

They have some tall stories to tell too, as they present an alternative rock 'n' roll history, with tongue firmly in cheek.

Serious about their music but a helluva lot of fun with it.

CHRIS LORD & HER BLUES EXPRESS

Band.jpg

A powerful and raunchy rhythm & blues 5-piece, Chris Lord and her Blues Express produce classic jazzy blues with exuberance and joy, taking pains to dig out some rare gems of lesser-known tracks.  The band is driven by the superb voice of Chris Lord supported by a heady mix of sax, flute and guitar all built upon a first class rhythm section.  Together the band merges to weave a magical spell wherever they perform. Influences range from early artists such as Bessie Smith and Big Mama Thornton to more modern exponents of the art like Etta James, Beth Hart and Imelda May.

Joining Chris in the band are soulful tenor sax/flute player Tom Domagala; Rick Booth on guitar; Raf Ruocco on bass and Rick Philpott on drums along with special guest Don Lang on tenor sax – all great musicians with extensive experience and great musical pedigree.

Jensen leads his own quartet Henrik Jensen's ‘Followed By Thirteen’ which he founded in 2010. His compositions are thoughtful, playful, bursting with energy, at times melancholic and there is space in the arrangements, room for each member of the quartet to express themselves. The group released their 2nd album 'BLACKWATER' in September 2016, which features Andre Canniere-trumpet, Esben Tjalve-piano, and Antonio Fusco-drums. 'Blackwater' has received some outstanding reviews including the Guardian and the Evening Standard.

FRIDAY 26 OCT

SISTER COOKIE

Born in Lagos, Nigeria in the late 1980s, Sister Cookie fell in love with music early on. Her mother's juju, highlife and reggae records, the jazz LPs in her father's collection, the pulsating traditional West African rhythms heard at numerous special occasions and the moving sprituals that dominated every church service served as the soundtrack to her childhood. She also taught herself to play the piano from an early age.

Sister Cookie has wowed audiences across Europe with her unique sound and charisma. Her debut single, a version of Willie Jone' 1962 scorcher Where's My Money was released on the Italian label Soulful Torino Record in 2014. The limited-edition, vinyl-only release sold out almost instantly.

She performs tonight with a full backing band. Cookie's first time at The Bear.
