Imagine Tammy Wynette crossed with The Ventures and you’ll have an idea of the sonic world of Americana artist Stacy Antonel. Always a genre-defying artist, Antonel blends her passion for classic country, jazz and surf rock on her recent EP of covers: The Seahorses Vol. 1. Recorded at Nashville’s Fitting Room Studio, the result is a fresh hybrid of musical styles that feels both vintage and hyper-modern.
Antonel’s personal story is also a reflection of this combination of influences. Born and raised three blocks from the beach in San Diego, she fell in love with classic country music through a twist of fate: the dollar record bin at a thrift store. Soon after, she started a successful country cover band called Ginger Cowgirl, and in 2017 relocated to Nashville to pursue a career as a songwriter and recording artist. Her debut album Always the Outsider was critically praised, netting coverage in publications from Main Street Nashville to the Bluegrass Situation, and was hailed as a 2022 Essential Album by influential country music blog Saving Country Music.
She joins us with her full UK band.
“The possessor of a hugely impressive vocal range…Antonel’s talents have fully blossomed on an album that refashions honky tonk and swing in a striking manner.”
“With three such talented musicians it shouldn’t have been a surprise, but the way they played together exceeded all expectations”
“She navigates the Americana/country environs inhabited by Emmylou Harris, Allison Moorer and Lucinda Williams, and in doing so, proves she’s every bit their equal.”
