Recognised by peers and audiences alike, Big Mama’s Door is one of the UK’s most engaging and entertaining rhythm and blues bands. With their distinctive blend of sultry 1950s R'n'B, soul, and a hint of jazz, they bring a rare combination of professionalism, charisma, and pure joy to every performance.
The band was born out of London’s legendary blues bar, Ain’t Nothin’ But, where lead vocalist Fiona McElroy first met guitarist Mal Barclay (Aisha Khan & the Rajahs, Grace Under Fire, The Cadillac Kings) during the Ian Siegal-led blues jams of the early 2000s.
They were the first female-fronted band in the UK at the time to champion the classic rhythm and blues of the '40s, '50s, and '60s — paving the way for the next generation of powerhouse R'n'B women and building a devoted following across London and the UK blues festival scene.
The band’s eclectic mix of originals and vintage covers is delivered with authenticity, soul, and steeped in the traditions of Blue Note, Chess, and Atlantic Records, creating music that feels timeless.
Featuring Fiona McElroy (vocals), Brad Shaw (drums), Francesca Shaw (double bass), Steve Walsh (guitar), and Andy Knight (keys).
“Excellent band… her smoky laid-back voice does the risqué blues with soul stuff with a vengeance”
“A fabulous, sassy lady at the front sensitively phrasing the melodies. Fiona McElroy fits the template as though specifically designed for her”
