Stan Getz is probably best known to non-jazz buffs for his stunning album “Getz/ Gilberto” which we showcased with Mario Bakuna at The Bear in April. That album introduced the world to bossa nova and the classic “Girl from Ipanema” but he was much more than that with a career that spanned decades and genres taking in both hard core be-bop and cool jazz.
Tonight we explore Getz’s legacy in more depth in the company of master saxophonist James Allsopp and some of London’s most in-demand musicians.
In a 20 year career Allsopp has played with legendary artists such as The Last Poets, David Axelrod, Dr John and Mulatu Astake, for European jazz luminaries such as Django Bates, Nostalgia 77, Kit Downes and Polar Bear and on more commercial albums by Jamie Cullum and Jorja Smith.
His debut album was nominated for BBC Jazz Award for Best Album 2007 and he is a professor of saxophone and clarinet at the Royal Academy of Music and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
The program will feature music from Getz’s rich back catalogue so expect lush ballads, swinging standards, motoring bop compositions and yes some of those famously lilting bossa novas.
Joining James on saxophone will be Colin Oxley on guitar, Oli Hayhurst on double bass and Dave Storey on drums and they will be playing music from their brand new album "Ballads and Bossas".
“Allsopp is an astonishingly fluent tenor sax soloist, the ideas just seem to flow effortlessly.”
“[Allsopp is]…perhaps the most gifted British saxophonist of his generation, not to mention the most adaptable.”
