Thrilled to welcome the Alistair Martin Quintet, featuring special guest Tom Smith for an evening celebrating the centenary of the birth of Miles Davis - "Prince of Darkness."
Bringing together two of the most exciting voices on the contemporary British jazz scene, "visionary" trumpeter Alistair Martin and award-winning saxophonist Tom Smith explore the chameleonic legacy of Miles Davis. From the iconic cool of the 1950s to the fiery innovations of his later eras, this is a powerhouse tribute to an icon of style and restless reinvention.
After studying Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music, Alistair released his debut album ‘Oblivion’ in 2021. Oblivion was hugely influenced by social and political issues, such as climate change and conflict and musically the album included elements from hip hop and electronic music, fused with a classic jazz quintet sound.
Tom Smith is an award-winning saxophonist, composer, and arranger, firmly established within London’s vibrant jazz scene. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and a two-time finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year competition (2014, 2016), Smith is recognised for his innovative projects, dynamic compositions, and commitment to pushing the boundaries of jazz.
Alistair Martin (trumpet), Tom Smith (saxes), Niklas Lukassen (bass), Will Barry (piano), Dave Storey (drums).
“Martin’s tone is expressive, rich and full of melodic invention. Which, given his youthful age speaks to an astonishing maturity as a musician.”
“Technically outstanding abilities and a punchy, soulful tone.”
