Takeda is a superb genre-blurring guitar-based folk rock band. They create the immersive and emotionally charged sonic landscapes of Grizzly Bear and Big Thief, and combine them with the compelling, delicate lyricism and textures of Nick Drake.
They formed in 2022 when Josh Harrison escaped a cult in rural England and started a band inspired by his experiences. Growing up in a cult was the fertile soil for sprouting a unique brand of music that they call 'grunge folk'.
Having left with a catalogue of songs, Josh recruited Charlie Wilson on drums and David Woodgett on bass. Together, they turned those songs into something much bigger than the sum of their parts, moving effortlessly between hushed intimacy and powerful crescendos. Labelling themselves “the loudest acoustic guitar band on Earth,” they will be touring their debut album In Venus’ Train across the UK in support of the release.
In Venus’ Train channels mystical figures from folklore and biblical metaphors, songs about obsession, love, and grieving a past life, drawing influence in equal measure from British folk revivalists Fairport Convention and alt-metal icons Tool.
Fusing the melodic and emotional sensibility of folk with the noise and fuzzed guitar tones of grunge, Takeda is making music that sounds like no one but themselves.
“A bit of an epic”
“Using the signature grunge style of contrasting dynamics and grittier moments juxtaposing the softer sections, the band create a tasteful style with rich textures and characterful vocals”
